Discover King’s Day of Belgium

Origins of the Celebration
Belgium became independent in 1830, and King Leopold I took the throne the following year.
In 1866, his successor King Leopold II designated 15 November as the official King’s Day.
The choice of date comes from the Catholic “Name Day” tradition. November 15 is the Day of St Leopold and St Albert the Great, both names held by Belgian monarchs. Hence, the day symbolically honours the monarch and the institution of the crown.
From Church to State Ceremony
In the morning of King’s Day, a Te Deum thanksgiving service takes place at the St Michael & St Gudula Cathedral in Brussels. Members of the royal family, government officials and diplomats attend to pray for the nation. The service is conducted in Belgium’s three official languages — French, Dutch and German — reflecting the country’s linguistic diversity.
Since 2001, a civil ceremony has also been held at the Palace of the Nation, home to the Federal Parliament, featuring speeches and medal presentations.
Symbolism and Modern Meaning
In Belgium’s federal, multilingual society, the King’s Day stands as a symbol of unity and continuity. It highlights the monarchy’s role as a unifying institution, transcending linguistic and regional divides. While National Day (21 July) celebrates independence, the King’s Day celebrates the enduring stability of the constitutional monarchy.

Today’s Observance
Today, the King’s Day is observed in a dignified, reflective manner rather than with public festivities. Most people continue their daily routines, but media outlets broadcast the ceremonies and the royal website publishes official messages. In Brussels, visitors may notice flags displayed across government buildings and ceremonial processions near the cathedral.
Though quiet in tone, the King’s Day on 15 November carries profound meaning. It is Belgium’s tribute to its monarchy, a reflection on stability and unity, and a celebration of harmony in diversity.
To mark King's Day this year, the Belgian Embassy in China will hold a celebration today, November 14 (Friday), to commemorate this symbolic day.
